(UPDATE) Pedestrian Struck and Killed on Highway 101 Near Fortuna This Morning
UPDATE, 11:27 a.m.: From the California Highway Patrol:
On 08-27-2019, at approximately 12:58 AM, the Humboldt Area CHP Dispatch Center received a call of a pedestrian who had been hit by a vehicle on Northbound US-101 south of Main St. in Fortuna. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and located a deceased pedestrian, later identified as 55 year old Margery Wells of Eureka. The driver of the vehicle which struck Ms. Wells, identified as 26 year old Moshe Pepper of Mad River, continued a short distance up the roadway and contacted law enforcement to report he had been involved in the collision.
Impairment is not considered to be a factor in this collision. At this time it is unknown why Ms. Wells was in the roadway.
The CHP Humboldt Area Office is continuing its investigation into this collision and asks anyone who may have information to contact the office at 707-822-5981 or send an email to humboldt_area.humboldt_area@chp.ca.gov.

Dispatch logs from the California Highway Patrol note that a woman was struck and killed by a driver just north of Fortuna early this morning at about 1 a.m.
According to the logs, at 12:54 a.m. dispatchers were notified that a woman wearing dark pants and a pink top was walking southbound one lane of the highway near the Palmer Boulevard exit. Moments later, they were informed that the woman was swinging an object at passing vehicles.
She was struck just a couple of minutes later, apparently by a driver heading north on the other side of the highway. By 1:08 a.m., Fortuna Fire had arrived at the scene and pronounced the pedestrian dead.
A stretch of northbound 101 was closed for some time while an investigation was conducted.
