Indian Percussion Study Group for beginners starting January 2026! Come learn how to play the most famous drum in India called “Tabla.” Tabla is a set of two small drums, typically played on the floor, that combines the synergy of a kind of beatbox poetry and cyclical rhythms to form elaborate phrases and striking geometry. With deep yogic roots, tabla is my most recommended instrument to practice meditation. Tabla is a profound and indispensable supplement to any developing musician in a more interconnected world community.

The study group will meet for 4 weeks per month for an estimated period of 1-2 years, depending on the pace of the group. Each meeting is recorded for absences and extra studying. Semi-regular attendance and regular practice encouraged.

The goal of this group is being at square zero and bring them to basic fluency. After the two year period, you will be able to play and recite tabla compositions, compose your own variations for improvisation, practice effectively, and much more.

By participating in this group, you will build confidence in your abilities, feel more at peace and focused, start hearing rhythms in nature you never noticed before, and be connected to a budding tabla player community in Humboldt.
