OBITUARY: William “Bill” Lee Osborne
You couldn’t go anywhere with him without running into someone he knew. He never forgot a face, and he remembered your name and exactly how and why he knew you. He had a meaningful handshake, firm to the point that it almost hurt, but he wanted you to remember it. He lived a full life that touched many people along the way.
William “Bill” Lee Osborne, 75, of Eureka, CA passed away peacefully December 27, 2025, with family, friends, and his beloved husky mix, Pearl, by his side. He was known by a few names, so you may have called him Bill, Billy, Mr. Osborne or Mr. O; whatever you called him, he was a thoughtful and generous person who will be deeply missed.
Bill was born June 22, 1950, in New Mexico and was the middle child of five siblings. The family moved around in Bill’s early years and eventually settled in Arcata in 1958 where Bill lived for almost 30 years before moving to Eureka. While living in Town & Country Trailer Court as a kid, Bill had the largest single paper route in Humboldt County from 1958-1963, which was a great source of income for someone so young. He loved to tell stories about this first job and how proud he was to have enough money to treat his friends to ice cream and soda at the nearby dairy. This was the first indicator that Bill was a hard worker who willingly gave whatever he could. He never hesitated to offer his time, muscle and expertise to family, friends, and neighbors who needed help. He also frequently picked up the tab before anyone noticed or had time to argue.
Sports were a constant in Bill’s life starting with Little League, then track and baseball in high school where Bill played on the 1968 Arcata High School (AHS) varsity baseball team that was inducted into the AHS Hall of Fame. He played baseball at Humboldt State and went on to play competitive fastpitch softball well into his 50s. It was said that he remembered every play of every game he ever coached or played, and he could quote the men’s fastpitch softball rule book verbatim. Bill was known for his upper body strength and enjoyed showing it off with a push up challenge, but not just regular pushups. If you know, you know. He was an enthusiastic racquetball player who played doubles with his best friend, Larry Passarini, spending many weekends at travel tournaments and CalCourts in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Bill worked at Safeway during and after college, and he also owned and drove a Pepsi delivery route for several years. He is widely and fondly remembered for his years as Mr. Osborne, or “Mr. O”, at South Bay Elementary School where he taught 4th grade starting in 1987 and earned the Jean Olson Career Achievement Award before he retired in 2010. Mr. O was known for having ample supplies of Red Vines and great PE equipment, making math worksheets fun with riddles, playing music, and teaching his students to square dance. Bill went above and beyond and truly cared for all 600+ students he taught in his 23 years. He was proud to educate and support so many young people and loved running into former students and their families.
Bill loved his dogs, his ponds and koi fish, working in his yard, birdfeeders, windchimes, Pierson’s, houseboat trips, building decks and fences, fishing, dancing, oldies music, his sun porch, going for a drive, Ding Dongs, Mountain Dew Code Red, crossword puzzles, riddles, Scrabble, hoodies and ball caps, Jack Reacher books, the Hallmark Channel, and the San Francisco Giants and 49ers. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He loved his friends and family strongly and would do anything for them. His absence is felt by us all.
Bill is survived by his former wife and close friend of 44 years, Julie Bartlett Osborne; his daughter, Lindsay Osborne and son-in-law, Jeff Reitz; his grandson, Connor Reitz; his siblings Jim (Lynda) Osborne, Sharon (Gordy) Colson, Beverly (Bob) Weatherbee, and Gary (Tish) Osborne; and former wife and mother of his daughter, Diana Drew Ingham. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members and friends.
Please join us as we celebrate Bill’s life Sunday, June 21 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Wharfinger Building in Eureka (1 Marina Way, Eureka, CA 95501). This is a casual celebration, and we encourage you to wear your favorite hoodie and ball cap, or San Francisco Giants attire. In lieu of flowers or if you wish to honor Bill’s memory, please consider donating to the Sequoia Humane Society where Bill served as a past board member.
