Many of the potholes on Second Street are large. Some of them are so deep you can see strata from when dinosaurs walked the Earth. Should we fill them or keep them open?

I actually just posted something on my Facebook page about the abysmal state of our town’s streets and how we need to address this problem. I think that filling the potholes on the main street through our historic business district should be a huge priority for Eureka

Fill them - before LoCO starts offering archaeological tours of Second Street.

But seriously, the fact that we are even debating potholes says something. After 12 years of the current mayor serving in city leadership as a councilmember and mayor, residents should not still have to ask candidates whether basic streets will be properly maintained.

Potholes are one of the most basic responsibilities of a city government. Under my leadership, I want our streets maintained so well that potholes aren’t a campaign issue at all in the future.

Thank you for the question. Second street from C Street to Commercial is slated for a complete overhaul mid October. Currently utilities will be put in for the new shelter project at Second and A Streets prior to the overhaul. Deferred maintenance has been an issue for a very long time. Thanks to Measure H, which I campaigned for and was passed by voters on November 2020 we are now able to aggressively repair our streets which have been deteriorating for years. I would add that since the passage of Measure H, the City has averaged approximately $3 million per year on street pavement rehabilitation projects. We prioritized roads with the highest daily traffic (Old Town, H, I, Harris, Henderson, Buhne, 14th, etc.) and are now getting to concentrate on lesser traveled roads like 2nd Street. Our roads have been neglected for decades only spending approximately $500,000 per year just patching potholes and never really having a sustainable maintenance program. This is why I advocated for Measure H and continue to ensure that those funds are being expended on our roads as our community made this their number one priority when polled back in 2020. We continue to maintain that level of funding this fiscal year despite facing budget cuts
