The sales tax in Eureka is extremely high at 10.25%. What would need to happen for you to support/push for lowering the Eureka sales tax?

Thank you for the question. Believe it or not, the City’s sale tax is only 1.50%. The county is at 2.75%. The state is at 6.00%. Totaling to 10.25%. Back in July of 2021 Measure H replaced Measure Q raising the sales tax from .5% to 1.5%. The sales tax that the city receives goes into the general fund, which in turn, is the city’s income. I would not be opposed to potentially bringing up a measure for the voters, like yourself, to vote on to lower taxes. The city council cannot just lower taxes. IF the sales tax were to be lowered, it could hurt the city. For example, if the sales tax was dropped to .75% it could result in approximately $4.8 million deficit. I would rather do a complete audit on the sales tax and see if there is even a possibility to lower the sales tax or remove it completely.
