Random 5th Ward Resident asks Jeff Leonard…
Eureka Economic Growth
In one of the previous questions answered, you mentioned how the City of Eureka helps the economy by providing good paying jobs, contracts and more. Could you explain any policies or plans you have on how to help Eureka’s economy by way of supporting the private sector? Is Eureka’s economic growth only possible through government jobs, grants, contracts, etc?

Thank you for the great question.
Private investment drives economic growth. Government jobs are an important component of our economy, but government doesn’t drive growth.
What can I do as a council member to encourage private investment and help grow our economy?
Meet with local businesses: when I served on council, I encountered a number of situations where local businesses where considering a project, but were worried that the permitting process would be too difficult. I set up collaborative meetings with city staff to clarify permitting expectations and brainstorm ideas to help businesses successfully meet those expectations.
Meet with visiting business representatives: when business representatives visit, I can serve as a positive, professional representative for the City of Eureka. Not everyone who visits decides to invest, but we can let people know that the City welcomes outside investment.
Promote positive customer service at City Hall: Big or small, city staff can help local businesses solve problems, meet current requirements, and be successful.
Council members can be positive, supportive, and helpful. I think that’s the best way I can help local businesses succeed.
