Gas

Are you going to get to the bottom of why Eureka’s gas is exceptionally high? We are even much higher than Alaska and Hawaii. How is that possible? We are the highest in the state of California. What is going on and why is this allowed? Is there a local getting a kickback? What are you going to do

Anil Dwivedi

Sue, Thank you for raising this important concern. I agree that Eureka residents deserve answers about our exceptionally high gas prices.

In June 2026, California’s Division of Petroleum Market Oversight identified Humboldt County as having the highest gasoline prices in Northern California.

Our distance from refineries, transportation costs, and California taxes contribute to higher prices, but we also need to examine fuel distribution, competition, and pricing practices.

As mayor, I would request a formal review by state petroleum regulators, work with county and state officials to investigate the causes, and explore ways to increase competition and reduce costs.

Regarding kickbacks, I have seen no credible evidence of wrongdoing, but any legitimate evidence should be investigated by the appropriate authorities.

I understand that a mayor cannot directly control gasoline prices. But that does not mean a mayor should sit back and do nothing. Leadership means asking difficult questions, demanding transparency, and advocating for residents.

Eurekans deserve answers, fair competition, and relief from unnecessarily high costs.
