Reach 18 has landed and will remain on the ground for a few hours while their medical crew picks the patient up and returns with the Arcata Ambulance unit. The METAR automated weather observation for ACV (Arcata Airport) shows heavy fog and flying conditions that would not be suitable for a helicopter, which is the likely reason for this unusual chain of events
todd / 12:55 a.m.
Willow Creek Agency Assist: Willow Creek Fire responding to the Berry Summit Rest Area on HW 299 to secure a landing zone for medical helicopter Reach 18 which appears to be coming from the Santa Rosa area. An Arcata Ambulance crew is also responding to transport the flight crew with their equipment to Saint Joseph’s hospital to retrieve a patient who likely needs to be flown out of the region for treatment. I suspect the reason for landing in the Berry Summit area is the weather at the lower elevations and along the coast as it would be far far faster to land at the hospital or one of the airports if that were feasible. The helicopter flew at around 6,000 ft MSL over Alderpoint Rd and is now between Kneeland and Hyampom if anyone heard helicopter activity
