It’s smoky down in Ferndale and environs this afternoon!
And that’s because Calfire is conducting a controlled burn in the Table Bluff area. They’re taking out about 12 acres of invasive beach grass, which apparently throws up a fine plume.
No emergency!
Going Down @ 4:19 p.m.
They’re making things all secure-like down at Halvorsen Park. We’re only a few days away from native daughter Sara Bareilles’ much-anticipated homecoming concert and the fences have started going up around the event space.
Have you got your tickets to get past those fences? More importantly, do you have too many tickets? ‘Cuz other people would like to see Sara! If you were one of the lucky few who secured entry in the initial crush and you’ve either decided you can’t go or you were more ambitious on the number of friends you have, remember that you can return your tix so they can be redistributed to those on the waiting list.
If you’re curious on the logistics of how this is all going to work, the City of Eureka lays it all out here. See you Sunday!
Going Down @ 2:38 p.m.

Mateel Community Center general manager Shiloh Croybaker sends in the following concert poster signed by the boys way back in 1989 when they played down in SoHum
“This hangs on our wall here at the Mateel,” Croybaker writes. “God I wish we could get them to do a community show here.”

Just days after the Supreme Court opted to squash Mike Lindell’s hopes of avoiding a billion-dollar defamation lawsuit filed against him by Dominion Voting Systems — oops! — the political provocateur and MyPillow CEO found himself in Eureka, California. Why did Mike decide to sneak behind the Redwood Curtain at this tumultuous moment? We thankfully aren’t connected enough to be privy. What we do know is that he stopped at Tres Chiles Picosos on Broadway for some noms and posed with some of the staff.
“Thank you for supporting Local Businesses in Humboldt County!!! We hope you visit us again,” TCP wrote on Facebook. “#goodfood #gooddrinks #goodvibes #MikeLindell”

Local property owner Floyd Squires, who for years was a thorn in the side of the City of Eureka due to the often rundown condition of his rentals, has died at the age of 76.
According to the North Coast Journal, Squires’ death certificate notes he died of cardiac arrest that occurred in conjunction with a choking incident.
Now, LoCO could attempt to sum up Squires’ legacy for you in a few sentences, but we were thinking maybe just providing you with the list of all the times Squires and his various properties appeared on this site would do the trick. So here’s that:
A local surfer is recovering after a very attack-like encounter with a shark at Centerville Beach on Sunday afternoon.
The Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department provided a few details on the incident on its Facebook page:
At 1530hrs (3:30pm) FVFD was dispatched to a report of a shark or seal bite at Centerville beach. Unit at scene did confirm that the bite was from a shark. The patient was transported by City Ambulance to a hospital.
To our recollection of our membership, we have not had an incident like this. This is a reminder that there are many hazards to be aware of when you are at the beach.
Please be safe.
Sharktober is here, people. If you’re wondering how the surfer is doing, you can get some idea of his status and demeanor from an Instagram post put up earlier today by The Shop, a surf store in Arcata. In it, the chewed-up patient can be seen flashing the shaka sign, which, in this instance, would suggest that he thinks he’s going to be fine.
You can view a sanitized version of the post below. But if you’re the kind of person who needs to see a chomped-on leg you can click over to The Shop’s page to see the shark’s gory handiwork. Ouchie.
The climber has been safely extracted by Coast Guard and transferred to the ambulance. Willow Creek Fire advises that it is non-injury and fire units are clearing. The helicopter is returning to McKinleyville.
