What is the ideal height for new buildings in Arcata’s proposed Gateway Area? Four stories? Six stories? Eight? Would your answer change if there were some community benefits offered as a trade-off, like increased open space for parks and trails in exchange for taller structures?
Members of Arcata’s planning department and the more civic-minded among us pondered these questions during a virtual webinar on Tuesday evening. The meeting centered around building height and form-based code.
What the hell is form-based code, you ask? City staff defines form-based code as “land development regulation that implements a plan with physical form as its organizing principle” which contains “objective standards, not guidelines or subjective requirements.”

Like all well-meaning hoarders, LoCO sometimes finds itself scrolling through local Craigslist in search of… well, you never know what dumb thing you could clutter your life with!
Take these “[t]en free full-sized white paper maché redwood trees and removable redwood branches” for example! What could we do with those! The answer is, “Something!” Maybe LoCO will head to Arcata to pick them up! Or maybe you will beat us to them. Who can tell?!
