Just in case anyone missed the Eurovision Grand Final, you can relive, below, the moment that the Outpost’s John Kennedy O’Connor — on temporary loan to the Republic of San Marino — shouted out our shores to what Wikipedia assures us is “among the world’s most watched non-sporting events every year, with hundreds of millions of viewers globally.”

Find that clip, along with JKO’s cheeky goof at presenter Graham Norton and Hannah Waddingham, below!

Ed Jones, Blue Lake Fire battalion chief, tells the Outpost’s Ryan Burns that the cause of the fire is still unknown. They still aren’t sure where in the house the fire started.

“It was blazing hot when we got here,” he said.

Jones said that there was a great deal of ammunition in the house, as the homeowner is a target shooter. The evacuation order was prompted, in part, by the fact that fire personnel were aware that “there may be flying objects.”

One dog died in the fire. Another was saved.

The Jardin Santuario (Sanctuary Garden) on the corner of 11th and F streets in Arcata run by Centro Del Pueblo was again the target of vandalism this week, with some asshat spray painting “USA TRUMP” over the garden’s sign.

Centro Del Pueblo posted a message about the vandalism on its Facebook Page on Tuesday,  saying “the family and friends of the Sanctuary Garden for immigrants stand against racist attacks in our communities.”

Today is National Fentanyl Awareness Day — the day chosen to make a big push, on lots of fronts, to really reiterate that this drugs kills. It kills a lot of people. It kills quickly. You want to stay away.

A big coalition of organizations has put together the website linked above with lots and lots of resources. There’s a page on how you might encounter fentanyl (in ways you might not expect.) There’s a fentanyl FAQ. There are a Twitter and Instagram and Facebook accounts to follow, with lots of graphics you can share with your own followers, if you are so inclined.

We didn’t know, until a reader pointed it out to us a few minutes ago, that it was National Fentanyl Awareness Day, nor that all these great and helpful resources exist. Maybe you didn’t know either. Now you do.

From Caltrans

From Caltrans:

Route 254 (Avenue of the Giants) north of Miranda is now open as our crews were able to complete repair work ahead of schedule. The closure allowed us to expedite our stabilization response to recent geological activity. Crews rebuilt the southbound lane and shoulder of the highway in addition to installing rock slope protection.

Caltrans District 1 wants to thank Mercer-Fraser Company for making the repairs to the scenic roadway.

Soon: Bollards

As we mentioned last week, Old Town events are about to be a lot more pedestrian friendly.

Pavement-shredding work to install removable bollards on Second Street continued Wednesday. The new barriers will allow the City of Eureka to more easily close down sections of the street during Arts Alive, Friday Night Markets and other human gatherings.
