Chemical, Petroleum Incident in Eureka

A new hazardous materials incident involving petroleum has been reported to the California Office of Emergency Services.

According to a report published by the office, the incident took place at or near a ship/harbor/port in Eureka at around noon on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017.

Here’s the description of the incident that was recorded by the Office of Emergency Services:

Per the Reporting party : RP wants to report an on going issue with numerous boat owners doing boat maintenance on their vessels while they are docked at the marina causing various types of pollution to go into the water. This is occurring in a marina with 240 berths that are all occupied by vessels. Boat maintenance and refurbishing activities such as vessel hull painting and grinding causing chips, liquid paint and debris to go into the water. Reporting party states he has been obseving this activity for past 8 years and has reported issue to marina operators and claims nothing is being done to stop the practice.

This was the 21st hazardous materials incident recorded by the Office of Emergency Services in the Eureka area this year and the 40th petroleum spill in the county overall.
