Petroleum Incident in Ferndale

A new hazardous materials incident involving petroleum has been reported to the California Office of Emergency Services.

According to a report published by the office, the incident took place at or near a residence in Ferndale at around 9:30 a.m. today.

About five gallons of a substance described as “fuel, diesel” were released to the environment, according to the person who called in the report.

Here’s the description of the incident that was recorded by the Office of Emergency Services:

A debris box (open bin) toppled off a loading truck due to the incline of the terrain. Upon falling, it collided with the saddle tank of the truck, resulting in a puncture and a spill of diesel fuel onto the ground. No fires or injuries were reported. An environmental specialist responded to the site and conducted the cleanup operation.

This was the first hazardous materials incident recorded by the Office of Emergency Services in the Ferndale area this year and the 21st petroleum spill in the county overall.
