Petroleum Incident in Fortuna

A new hazardous materials incident involving petroleum has been reported to the California Office of Emergency Services.

According to a report published by the office, the incident took place at or near merchant/business in Fortuna at around 3 p.m. on Friday, July 26.

About 10 gallons of a substance described as “insulating oil unknown pcb” were released to the environment, according to the person who called in the report.

Here’s the description of the incident that was recorded by the Office of Emergency Services:

Per reporting party, due to a mechanical failure caused a pad-mounted transformer to leak approximately less than 10 gallons of insulating oil with unknown PCB content onto a 6ft x 6ft concrete pad. No waterways were impacted by this release. The leak has been stopped and contained, and contractors are currently conducting the cleanup process.

This was the fifth hazardous materials incident recorded by the Office of Emergency Services in the Fortuna area this year and the 25th petroleum spill in the county overall.
