Petroleum Incident in Eureka
A new hazardous materials incident involving petroleum has been reported to the California Office of Emergency Services.
According to a report published by the office, the incident took place at or near merchant/business in Eureka at around 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13.
Here’s the description of the incident that was recorded by the Office of Emergency Services:
Per reporting party, during the dismantling of locomotives, an attempt to remove the fuel tanks resulted in the release of approximately 15-20 gallons of diesel onto the dirt within the rail yard. The spill has been contained and posed no threat to waterways. The reporting party has completed the initial cleanup, but some contaminated soil remains. They plan to excavate a foot of soil to fully remediate the area. An onsite hazmat specialist, employed by the property, notified the county health department and was subsequently advised to contact OES.
This was the 19th hazardous materials incident recorded by the Office of Emergency Services in the Eureka area this year and the 33rd petroleum spill in the county overall.
