Petroleum Incident in McKinleyville
A new hazardous materials incident involving petroleum has been reported to the California Office of Emergency Services.
According to a report published by the office, the incident took place at or near a service station in McKinleyville at around 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Less than 55 gallons of a substance described as “gas / oil / water mixture” were released to the environment, according to the person who called in the report.
Here’s the description of the incident that was recorded by the Office of Emergency Services:
Per the reporting party: Overnight, an unknown individual or individuals uncapped a 55 gallon waste drum and knocked it over, causing a release of a maximum amount of 55 gallons of a gas, oil, and water mixture. This material entered a drainage system, however the caller does not know if it is a storm drain or secondary containment. Local police were notified. No further actions were taken. Cleanup / collection of the material is unknown.
This was the fifth hazardous materials incident recorded by the Office of Emergency Services in the McKinleyville area this year and the 34th petroleum spill in the county overall.
