Petroleum Incident in Arcata

A new hazardous materials incident involving petroleum has been reported to the California Office of Emergency Services.

According to a report published by the office, the incident took place at or near a residence, road in .

Here’s the description of the incident that was recorded by the Office of Emergency Services:

Per Reporting Party: The spill is coming from a set of dumpsters and in sheen of 10 feet x 10 feet, then reaching a gutter it is 250 feet x 1 foot. The sheen runs from the dumpsters to Jolly Giant Creek and Butcher's Slew, where it dissipates into tidal water. The bay is not impacted. No wildlife impact has been observed. The spill is stopped at this time. Rain and the King Tide are limiting the ability to contain the spill. Boggle, absorbent pads and booms are currently being used. The cause of the spill is under investigation.

This was the fourth hazardous materials incident recorded by the Office of Emergency Services in the Arcata area this year and the 47th petroleum spill in the county overall.
