Sewage Incident in Rio Dell

A new hazardous materials incident involving sewage has been reported to the California Office of Emergency Services.

According to a report published by the office, the incident took place at or near a residence in Rio Dell at around 9 p.m. yesterday.

About 1,000 gallons of sewage were released to the environment, according to the person who called in the report.

Here’s the description of the incident that was recorded by the Office of Emergency Services:

Per reporting party, A collection system in the city of Rio Dell has been damaged due to an earthquake, resulting in the release of 1,000 gallons of sewage. The current heavy rainfall is worsening the situation, causing the sewage to overflow from the main hole. A trench has been dug at the end of the gravel road to divert the sewage into the Eel River, keeping it away from private property. All private property is being protected with sandbags and signage. Cleanup efforts are being carried out by the reporting party.

This was the 13th hazardous materials incident recorded by the Office of Emergency Services in the Rio Dell area this year and the 19th sewage spill in the county overall.
