Sewage Incident in Eureka
A new hazardous materials incident involving sewage has been reported to the California Office of Emergency Services.
According to a report published by the office, the incident took place at or near waterways in Eureka at around 11:45 a.m. today.
About 4,500 gallons of a substance described as “sanitary sewer” were released to the environment, according to the person who called in the report.
Here’s the description of the incident that was recorded by the Office of Emergency Services:
Per the Reporting Party: A debris blockage in a sewer main caused the material to release out of 2 man hole covers and a private line sanitary sewer clean out. The material impacted the street, gutter and entered a storm drain. The storm drain leads into a marsh area behind 2616 Broadway Street in Eureka. The release as been stopped. Crews have cleared the blockage. Clean up was completed by City of Eureka Public Works; 2,500 gallons was recovered, the 2,000 gallons that entered the storm drain was unrecoverable.
This was the 22nd hazardous materials incident recorded by the Office of Emergency Services in the Eureka area this year and the 20th sewage spill in the county overall.
