Facilities Manager - 5th & D Street Theater
Role summary
The Facilities Manager helps keep the 5th & D Street Theater safe, functional, organized, and ready for productions, rentals, volunteers, and community use. This is a part-time role combining regular building checks, basic upkeep, practical troubleshooting, safety oversight, and care for the theater’s shared spaces and equipment.
The Facilities Manager works with staff, volunteers, renters, contractors, and each show’s technical team. The role supports safe and successful productions without automatically becoming the designer, builder, or technician for every show. The goal is to help people use the space safely and smoothly, while supporting the creative work happening on and offstage.
Key responsibilities
- Walk through the building regularly and notice safety, maintenance, access, cleanliness, organization, or readiness problems.
- Handle basic resets, restocking, and minor upkeep that fit the manager’s skills and scheduled hours.
- Help keep the stage, backstage, shop, storage, dressing rooms, booth, and other shared areas safe, usable, and reasonably organized.
- Keep simple records and standard procedures for shared tools, lighting and sound equipment, cables, booth systems, supplies, and technical areas.
- Manage building-access information, alarm codes, and basic facility systems, making sure authorized users have clear instructions and appropriate access.
- Track repair, maintenance, cleaning, and improvement needs, and coordinate approved work with volunteers, vendors, or contractors when additional labor or expertise is needed.
- Familiarize renters, volunteers, designers, Technical Directors, Build Leads, and production teams with building rules, safety expectations, emergency procedures, and approved systems.
- Work with the Production Manager and each show’s technical leadership when facility readiness, shared equipment, installation plans, or safety review requires the Facilities Manager’s involvement.
- Pause work that presents an immediate safety risk and promptly raise concerns that require specialized help, additional staffing, funding, equipment, or board approval.
Working relationship
The Facilities Manager reports to a board-designated representative of NCRT, who serves as the day-to-day point of contact and provides direction on behalf of the organization. This representative coordinates with the appropriate boards, staff, and committees when additional direction or approval is needed. The Facilities Manager also works closely with the Production Manager, Office Manager, and Director of Public Experience.
Time, pay, and expectations
This is a part-time, hourly position paying $18 per hour, currently estimated at approximately 6–10 hours per week on average. Workload will vary and may be heavier during production changeovers, facility workdays, maintenance projects, and periods of increased venue use. The schedule may include evenings and weekends as organizational and production needs require.
Helpful experience
- Experience with theaters, performance venues, community arts spaces, facilities, shops, or technical production.
- Familiarity with building safety, tools, storage systems, maintenance coordination, and shared equipment.
- Working knowledge of lighting, sound, backstage, booth, shop, electrical, or stage systems.
- Experience coordinating volunteers, contractors, renters, artists, or community work groups.
- Clear, respectful communication and the confidence to pause unsafe work or enforce agreed standards.
- Good judgment about when to handle an issue, when to request support, and when specialized expertise is required.
- Strong organization, documentation, follow-through, and practical problem-solving.
