(Job #516020) Reprographics Specialist II, Production Assistant, $3,120.00-$4,711.00 monthly. Appointments are typically made at the beginning of the salary range. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, benefited, non-exempt, 12-month pay plan permanent position with a one-year probationary period in Marketing & Communications. Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi’ni (over in the woods). Position Summary: The Production Assistant operates digital printing presses, large format printers, automated mailing equipment, pre-press equipment, and bindery equipment. The position works under deadline to complete variable data mailings and a variety of printed materials, including large format. This position maintains and updates job tracking database. The position works with teams that includes colleagues from within the unit, clients, and student assistants. Jobs require time and materials accounting, quality control checks and efficient executions. Other duties include light maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment, installing large format displays, organizing and cleaning the press room, assisting other operators, and back-up customer service.

Key Responsibilities: Equipment production, including setting up, operating, and cleaning of digital presses, large format printers, bindery and mailing equipment. Keeping up to date on mailing regulations. Filling out appropriate paperwork and updating job tracking systems. Using graphics software for variable data printing, and setting up files to print correctly. Troubleshooting equipment problems, make necessary adjustments, and minor repairs to equipment. Keeping work areas cleared for efficient work production, and handling routine maintenance. Customer service, including communicating on phone, in person, and by email to clients. Answering questions and advising.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include: Working knowledge of reprographics operations and functions. Ability to operate standard print production equipment, including high speed digital presses, various bindery equipment, large format printers, automated mail equipment, and a variety of small precision measuring devices. Able to perform basic maintenance on standard equipment and to troubleshoot equipment problems. Ability to accurately perceive color. Familiarity with paper stock and other materials used in printing. Ability to stay current on postal regulations and to help the unit follow ever-changing standards. Able to work well with others in a diverse environment, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to provide lead work direction to student assistants. Possession of a valid California drivers’ license.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Working knowledge of and the ability to use standard PC and Macintosh platforms, their operating systems and applicable software.
• Demonstrated understanding of and ability to operate a wide range of reprographics equipment and systems, including, but not limited to, the ability to operate pre-press equipment/software, high speed copiers (black & white and color), and bindery equipment. Ability to learn new equipment and processes quickly, as well as troubleshoot applicable equipment. Requires basic knowledge of lithography and reprographics systems and operations.
• Ability to produce basic variable data on high speed copiers.
• Working knowledge of desktop publishing and graphic software and the ability to manipulate and translate media, as well as process and enhance electronic files through pre-press software.
• Working knowledge manipulating color values and ensuring even density on the sheet and consistent color throughout the job using applicable equipment.
• Ability to manipulate and set up files and equipment in the production of a wide range of specialized material and media.
• Demonstrated ability to adjust and adapt to a changing work environment and requirements including the ability to quickly learn to operate applicable new equipment/software and to obtain certifications when applicable.
• Effective communication and customer service skills.
• If assigned, ability to provide lead work direction to student assistants.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience using Adobe Creative Suite graphic software for print or design. Experience installing large format wall graphics and cut vinyl displays. Experience preparing automated marketing mail and knowledge of applicable U.S. Postal Service requirements and processes related to standard and automated mailing processes. Familiarity with paper stock and other materials used in printing. Working knowledge of campus graphics standards and procedures.
