This position requires that you can work a news beat with an eye toward finding interesting, compelling, and important stories. The Outpost office is shared casual space without a front desk receptionist. Basic office duties are shared by all staff, even the editor. The ability to reflect on, critique, and celebrate Humboldt is essential to success at the position.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Produce clean, conversational writing -preferably in a variety of different registers, depending on the story’s requirements.

Conduct interviews in person, over the phone, through email or other forms of communication.

Gather and check facts.

Monitor and track local government meeting agendas, election measures and candidates for office that pertain to the assigned new beats(s).

Collect, monitor, distribute, promote newsworthy information that affects, or is of interest to, Humboldt County and surround areas.

Create engaging social media posts.

Take a satisfactory photograph.

Answer the office phone.

Assist visitors who enter the office.

Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent. Education or experience in journalism or related field preferred.

Possess a valid CA driver’s license.

Maintain a clean DMV record.

Maintain auto insurance coverage.

Ability to operate a personal computer and smartphone.

Strong written and oral communications skills.

Strong grasp of grammar and punctuation.

Ability to take direction.

Have solid interpersonal skills.

Available to work nights and weekends as needed.

Ability to sit for long periods of time.
