Prelude to “Outliers & Outlaws”, The Eugene Lesbian History Project: A Talk on Ruth Mountaingrove, “The Blatant Image” and Lesbian Feminist Photography at Rootworks Women’s Land
Learn the backstory to the film documentary “Outliers and Outlaws” with Kate Hitt at this Lunchbox talk at the Arcata Playhouse. Every lunchbox comes with homemade soup, salad, bread, and a beverage.
In 1974, Ruth and Jean Mountaingrove founded “WomanSpirit” magazine, dedicated to both feminism and spirituality. In 1978, they bought land in Southeastern Oregon for a collective women’s experience and called it Rootworks. Ruth also led “Ovulars” (photography workshops) and edited the feminist photography journal, “The Blatant Image”. Ruth moved to Arcata, California in 1985, where her writing, experimental photography, theatre, songs, and other artistic endeavors continued to flourish alongside her connections to lesbian friends, artists, poets and writers, and the academic world.
“Black Silk and Other Poems, Creative Work of Ruth Mountaingrove” (2025, Many Names Press, ISBN 978-1-944497-10-1) was a collaboration by friends of Ruth’s. Vinnie Peloso and Sue Hilton compiled the initial poems and got permissions. Book artist/publisher Kate Hitt first met Ruth at the Ovular and was a contributor to “The Blatant Image” in 1983. Just a printer back then, little did Kate know she would come to compile, design and publish Ruth’s book “Black Silk” 42 years later.
