7th Annual Conservation Lecture Series

Sequoia Park Zoo

EUREKA, CA – The Sequoia Park Zoo’s 7th Annual Conservation Lecture Series kicks off October 11th, 2017 and runs through March 2018 on the second Wednesday of each month. The lecture begins at 7:00 PM, with a reception at 6:30 PM prior to the talk. These educational lectures are FREE to the public and the Sequoia Park Zoo invites you to join! On October 11, 2017, Mary Wykstra of Action for Cheetahs in Kenya (ACK), presents: Carnivores Livelihoods and Landscapes (CaLL) a lecture about cheetahs, held in the Zoo’s Flamingo Room at 7:00 PM and preceded by a reception with a Fair Trade African Crafts Sale beginning at 6:30 PM. Mary’s 2017 fundraising efforts focus on the launch of Carnivores Livelihoods and Landscapes (CaLL), the new parent organization that supports ACK and other independent conservation and community-development projects in Kenya. As CaLL’s flagship project, ACK uses the cheetah as a keystone species to create a link between landscape level carnivore conservation with community conservation efforts. Mary’s presentation will highlight ACK’s range-wide conservation strategies, use of field staff from within the community, and the cultural value of land. ACK works with the Kenya Wildlife Service to identify key carnivore conservation areas using base sites in the Makueni and Samburu regions to develop methods and awareness materials.
