“A Day at the Daydream Cafe” Cal Poly Humboldt Opera Workshop
The Opera Workshop Ensemble from the Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre at Cal Poly Humboldt is excited to present “A Day at the Daydream Cafe” where the employees and customers are all living one day at a time, keeping up hope that better things are afoot. The cafe is “open” for one night only on Monday, December 8th at 7:30 pm within the Fulkerson Recital Hall on the Cal Poly Humboldt campus. The performance features 13 actors singing approximately 20 songs from the world of musical theater. The singers are supported with live accompaniment by Simon Oh (DMT staff accompanist) and MJ Fabian (DMT theory faculty).
Conceptualized and directed by Elisabeth Harrington, the show is a collection of solos, small group and large group numbers. The performers have developed their character profiles in conjunction with the music so that the songs express their unique stories and identities. The setting is local favorite gathering place, The Daydream Cafe, and the time is current day. Songs come from both classical and modern musicals including How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961), Do I Hear A Waltz (1965), Jesus Christ Superstar (1970), The Rink (1984), Avenue Q (2004), Waittress (2015), Hadestown (2019), and more. A highlight of the performance is the spirited lament “Coffee Break” choreographed by ensemble member Pelly Dellapelle. Set and props are created by DMT Theatre staff.
The performance runs 85 minutes. Tickets are available at the door or online at tickets.humboldt.edu/dance-music-theatre: $15 general, $5 child, FREE for Cal Poly Humboldt Students with ID.
