The Clarke Historical Museum, the Humboldt County Historical Society, and the Humboldt County Library invite you to join us for our Saturday Speaker Series on March 2, 2024. Our guest speaker this month is Pete Johnston, a passionate advocate for local timber history and an integral part of the Timber Heritage Association (THA). He will cover a range of topics related to Humboldt County’s rich timber history.

Pete’s connection to Humboldt’s local timber history runs deep, having been born and raised in Eureka with his father, Riggs Johnston, who played a pivotal role in managing vast tracts of land south of Eureka, including the community of Falk. His childhood was filled with family and Boy Scout outings, exploring the remnants of Falk’s townsite, mill, and railroad trestles.

In 2000, Pete discovered THA, becoming an active volunteer in 2007. Over the past 16 years, he has dedicated much of his free time to restoring the historic Samoa Shops complex and Roundhouse behind the Samoa Cookhouse. His commitment to preserving historic structures goes beyond his role as Vice President of THA. He has served three terms as President and continues to be deeply involved with local history, an involvement that extends to organizations like the Clarke Museum, the Eureka Heritage Society, and the Humboldt County Historical Society.

In 2004, the historic Dolbeer and Carson Logging camp at Elk River was renamed in honor of Pete’s father, Riggs Johnston - in acknowledgment of his over 50 years of leadership in local scouting, the camp now proudly bears the name: ‘The Riggs Johnston Elk River Boy Scout Camp.’ Pete continues to contribute to the camp’s legacy as an adult Scout volunteer, actively participating in the committee overseeing camp repairs.

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to share Pete Johnston’s journey through local timber history, his experiences with THA, and the significance of his family’s legacy at the Elk River Boy Scout Camp.

The Saturday Speaker series is a collaboration between the Clarke Historical Museum, Humboldt County Library, and the Humboldt County Historical Society. It is made possible by our generous sponsors, The Cutting Edge Hair Salon and Carl Johnson Company. Admission to this event is free, but donations are greatly appreciated. We hope you will join us for this exciting event!
