- Monday, November 11th: HONORING VETERANS: THEIR SACRIFICE and the HUMAN COST of WAR ~ An Evening of Reflection, Stories, and Hope. FREE ADMISSION View on Facebook
The evening will begin by recognizing that November 11th is Veterans Day, a day to honor the personal sacrifices made by soldiers, veterans, and their families. This program will review the status and mission of the world’s first nuclear protest vessel, the Golden Rule; explore some of the many challenges of military service; summarize the current world situation regarding nuclear weapons; and address practical approaches to increase the realistic possibilities for peace in our lives, our communities, and the world.The evening will begin by recognizing that November 11th is Veterans Day, a day to honor the personal sacrifices made by soldiers, veterans, and their families. High school and college-aged youth from around Humboldt County will perform in a variety of media, including slam poetry, short dramatic sketches, and music. The themes of their performances will touch on war, peace, violence, climate change, and social justice. City of Eureka Poet Laureate, David Holper, will MC the evening.

Peter Alstone, Ph.D., assistant professor of Environmental Resource Engineering and faculty member of Schatz Energy Resource Center at Humboldt State University will moderate a panel to present a summary of the current state of knowledge on climate science and a range of technology pathways, including nuclear, consistent with lower levels of warming. The panel and audience discussion will feature an emphasis on local efforts in and near Humboldt County, including offshore and onshore wind, solar energy, and transportation.

At every moment of great trial in our nation’s struggles for justice we are inspired, find solace, and are carried on by that moment’s songs of freedom. These songs may be old, repurposed or composed as they are sung, but their meaning is fresh to that moment’s need for courage and unity.
To lift us in this strange and troubled time, ATW is collaborating with some fantastic Humboldt musicians to produce two distinct nights of Songs of Freedom:
I. The Great March
This concert is inspired by The Great March on Washington, of 1963, which was as seminal for its music, curated by Harry Belafonte, as for Martin Luther King’s I Have A Dream speech. From legends Mahalia Jackson and Marian Anderson to newcomers Bernice Johnson Reagon (singing with the Freedom Singers), Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and other’s, this night celebrates the great gospel, folk revival and civil rights music that came together in a desperate and inspired time.
Performances by The Nu Heavenly Tone Singers under the direction of James Harris, folk singer Chris Parreira and folk jazz fusion of The Paula Jones Band.

II. Anthems from the 60’s and Beyond
This concert is inspired by the movement toward peace brought about by the protests of the sixties and the heartbreak of the Kennedy/King assassinations. The music gave a voice to a sixties youth already feeling helpless from the tragic events of the time. We honor these brave musicians and poets for pushing the envelope of folk rock and reggae and leading powerful movements towards peace, continuing to influence the music of today.
Performances by Jan Bramlett, FireSign, and Asha Nan. Drawing inspiration from the Woodstock generation, the Caribbean and the streets of America.

Sunday, November 17: The “Practicing Peace Award,” honoring Edie and Bryan Jessup. View on Facebook
This new award honors those who have made ground level contributions to peace in our communities. Following an introductory presentation on Practicing Peace by Paul Chappell, Peace Literacy Advocate with the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation we will celebrate Edie and Bryan as our inaugural awardees.
Presenting the award are Terry Supahan, Bonnie MacGregor, Ann Anderson, Katherine Dunning and Peter Pennekamp.
Bryan Jessup is a graduate of Stanford University and the Berkeley Theological Union, receiving his Master of Divinity degree in 1984. He and Edie came to Humboldt in 2013 after serving 29 years in ministry in Maine, Connecticut, and Fresno. Throughout Bryan’s career in ministry, most recently as pastor of the Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Foundation, his commitment to the underserved and to social justice have been carried forward with devotion and loving attention. In our community, he and Edie have advocated for the homeless, the Justice for Josiah campaign, climate change, gun safety, immigration, and peace. It is fitting that this community honor Bryan and Edie for the important and inspirational efforts they have made to enrich our lives and our community.
Following a successful week of activities in fall, 2018, Against the Wind Festival organizers are launching a second festival in 2019. The Festival was created to draw attention to the nuclear threat to life on earth and to fuel a new voyage of the first nuclear protest vessel, the Golden Rule. The nexus between global warming, environmental degradation, defense spending and nuclear power has led to addressing broader issues threatening our world.
