Arcata Lantern Floating Ceremony

Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary

The 42nd Annual Arcata Lantern Floating Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, August 9th, 2025. In the morning there will be Lantern Making at the Arcata Farmer’s Market. Then around 7:30pm people will gather at the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary by Klopp Lake at the end of South I Street for the ceremony.

Visitors are encouraged to walk, bike or ride a shuttle van from the parking lot at Samoa and I Streets or the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center parking lot on South G Street.

This event is an opportunity to offer spiritual consolation for everyone, those we miss, departed loved ones, ancestors and all we hold dear. The City of Arcata’s Nuclear Free Zone Committee began this ceremony 42 years ago to commemorate the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and to affirm our dedication as a community to the cause of peace, to bring awareness to the dangers of nuclear proliferation, and to advocate for environmental sustainability.
