Art from Mending Hearts
“If people are offended by the art, well, they should be – rape and murder are offensive things,” said Humboldt Domestic Violence Services (HDVS) manager Patricia Samson about the Silent Witnesses on display for McKinleyville Arts Night this Friday, October 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the McKinleyville Shopping Center in the space next to Ramone’s. “Art From Mending Hearts” - a benefit show for HDVS and North Coast Rape Crisis Team (NCRCT) coordinated by MHS senior Stephanie Kingham – will display the Witnesses and other art to recognize survivors of & allies against violence against women and increase consciousness of this concern as October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The art is wide-ranging: life-size people cutouts and their stories known as the Silent Witnesses, survivor-made T-shirts from NCRCT and the “Hands Are Not For Hurting” quilt made by children in HDVS’ program, photography by local students as well as sculpture and acrylic paintings. Also live music will be provided by MHS senior Adyn McCabe. Refreshments provided; donation requested and proceeds benefit HDVS and NCRCT. Please note that due to the nature of the theme of the show, some language and images may be disturbing for children.
