DAZZLE SHJIPS by Benjamin Funke

The Black Faun Gallery

The Black Faun Gallery presents “Dazzle Shjips” a continuation of Benjamin Funke’s solo show consisting of drawings, prints, 16mm films, and abstract sculptures. Dazzle Shjips will run until February 23rd. This month’s Arts Alive showing takes place on Saturday, February 2nd from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Benjamin Funke received his MFA in Sculpture from the University of Notre Dame. He is Associate Faculty in Art at College of the Redwoods and Sculpture Technician at Humboldt State University. He is on the board of directors of the Redwood Art Association. Funke has exhibited artworks in venues including the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC, CICA in Seoul, South Korea and the Eastern Bloc for New Media in Montreal, Quebec. The WWI designs of Dazzle Camouflage were designed not to hide an object, but to distort perception. Benjamin Funke explores this concept by reassembling unused materials into new structures that give little hint to their original components. The figures have the presence and the mystery of exhumed relics, reanimated from their fated resting places as cast off items. Likewise, Funke’s 16mm projected films are distortions of shape and color, resulting in kaleidoscopic forms on a continuous loop. Modern and traditional techniques are combined to create these films, “I often create work by harvesting images from the reservoirs that surround us,” he explains. “I then alter these images using digital and manual methods, trying to defamiliarize the experience so viewers are moved to reevaluate the content and context of what they see.” The Black Faun Gallery is located at the corner of 2nd and G Streets in Old Town Eureka. The gallery is open to the public Thursday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and by appointment.
