Arts Alive - “Journeys III” by Lori Goodman

The Black Faun Gallery

The Black Faun Gallery is presenting an installation of large and small scale handmade paper sculptures by mixed media artist Lori Goodman. The exhibition is titled JOURNEYS III, and runs from December 2, 2017 to February 10, 2018. The Arts Alive opening on December 2nd at 6:00 pm will feature a series of short, linked animation segments called The Black Dot Practice Project, by Artists Who Animate. Kathe Lyth will play celtic harp. Lori Goodman sees the world and then recreates it by hand. Her interpretations of the natural and constructed world are often made of Lori’s handmade paper. “The structures and installations are the result of looking intimately at and absorbing parts of life,” states Goodman. “Small things can be astonishing and overlooked. Often this analysis results in dissecting and exaggerating observations. Making the work then becomes intuitive.” JOURNEYS III is the first installation at the new Black Faun Gallery location and is continued exploration for Goodman. “This show is a journey,” explains Goodman. “I have had many transformative journeys in my life. I have traveled, hiked, and lived in wonderful places. I am also fascinated by process. I want to know how the roof is thatched, how the hut is made, where the natural dye comes from, and how the hive or nest is constructed. These basic constructions are at the root of who we are and what we can do: all so very sophisticated in their simplicity. These forms also speak of community, of building together and using that which is found in our own environments.” The opening for JOURNEYS III will be accompanied by sidewalk screenings of The Black Dot Practice Project, a series of short, animated segments by members of the group, Artists Who Animate: Amy Uyeki, Brent Eviston, Julie McNiel, Kyle Couture and Steven Vander Meer. Each segment begins and ends on the same black dot, which seamlessly links each artist’s work together. The Black Faun Gallery is located at the corner of 2nd and G Streets in Old Town Eureka. The gallery is open to the public Thursday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and by appointment.
