HSU Downtown Block Party
Arts! Arcata is a monthly celebration of Art in and around downtown Arcata where you can find art showcased in all of its glorious forms in participating downtown businesses with wine pours by local nonprofits! Also, for our special September Arts! Arcata we are collaborating with Humboldt State University’s Center Arts and Associated Students to bring you the First Annual HSU Downtown Block Party! There you will find the ASB Welcome Back BBQ (for HSU Students), art, music, prizes and informational booths. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Chulita Vinly Club (CVC) and Calafia Armada (Oakland Familia). The CVC was launched in 2014 as an all-girl, all-vinyl club for self-identifying womxn of color in the context of providing a space for empowerment and togetherness. The group says that “we stand united as a female DJ collective spanning seven national chapters bringing together a community of vinyl-loving girls.” There is no music genre policy in the collective as anything goes. You’re just as likely to hear sixties girl-groups, punk, new wave, Chicano oldies, or dancehall reggae on any given night. Calafia Armada are a music/event collective that bring a positive community vibe and heavy cumbia beat to every show.
