Back to the Future: Remembering the Cape Mendocino Earthquakes

Clarke Historical Museum

The M 7.2 Cape Mendocino earthquake of April 25, 1992 and its M6.6 and 6.7 aftershocks caused over $60 million in losses and is the only Humboldt County earthquake to be gain a FEMA major disaster declaration. This talk with geologist Lori Dengler recounts what happened in 1992 and how that earthquake led to the establishment of the US National Hazard Mitigation Program and raised awareness of the Cascadia subduction zone. Local author Lin Glen will also be here signing copies of her basic earthquake/tsunami preparedness book for families “Sofie and Daniel Get Ready for Earthquakes.” She will also be showing a very basic do-it-yourself 3-day emergency kit for families.
