Bird at the Sanctuary: the Music of Charlie Parker
The Sanctuary’s “in the constellations now” series continues with “Bird at the Sanctuary: The music of Charlie Parker”. The front line will feature The unusual (and great) combination of trombone and viola, played respectively by James Zeller and Tree. They will be backed by the all rhythm section of Matthew Seno, piano, Danny Gaon, upright bass and Ramsey Isaacs on drums. Special guest Miles Schmidt on tap!
Few jazz musicians have been as influential or as controversial as Charlie “Yardbird” Parker. Coming of age in the rich swing landscape of 1920’s and ‘30s Kansas City, he created, through extreme dedication to his craft, a style both firmly rooted in and a dramatic departure from the jazz played at that time.
“Bird” was immediately divisive and influential, earning a devoted following of musicians who strive to follow his lead. Nina Simone said “Billie Holiday is our mother, and Charlie Parker is our father. Cootie Williams of The Duke Ellington orchestra called Parker “The greatest musician who ever lived” because “every instrument in the band tried to copy Charlie Parker and in The history of jazz there had never been one man who influenced all The instruments.”
Like J.S. Bach, Bird was most famous for his prodigious ability to improvise melodically. Mr. Zeller will provide insights into the background of the music, namely, the 12 bar blues form and its variations and the popular songs of The day that Parker used as frameworks, such as Jerome Kern’s “All The Things You Are” and Gershwin‘s “I Got Rhythm” and “Embraceable You”.
