Sixth Annual BPBS Fest 2016

The Sanctuary

FRIDAY, JUNE 10th… The Sanctuary - 6th annual (recurring) DREAMS As in years past, we will project Akira Kurosawa’s 1990 film DREAMS onto a large movie screen. The film is divided into 8 short sequences (each segment is around 15 minutes long,) with each scene scored in real time by a different musical act (the movie is subtitled, so the audience can still follow the plot.) Musicians perform from behind a screen, out of sight (similar to an orchestra pit,) which adds to the mystery and suspension of disbelief! Dream 1… Sunshine Through the Rain performed by: Datura Blues (Arcata/Portland) “The alchemy of Portland experimental psych ensemble Datura Blues is loaded with disparate sonic bases that meld together Eastern European jazz, bits of improvisational noise, transitioning instrumental post-rock, psychedelic rock freakouts, and haunting ambient textures…” Dream 2… The Peach Orchard performed by: Elektro-Kraken (Portland) “Drums, guitar and saxophone make up the primary colors of a nuclear jazz mess, somewhere between colorful chaos and primitive bliss…” Dream 3… The Blizzard performed by: Beat Totem (Portland) “The music of Beat Totem includes everything from Garage Rock, early punk, Psychedelic Soul, and Go-Go Swing, Jazz and Folk Rock. The sound is eclectic and inspired drawing from a combination of years of musical experience and a tribal vibe…” Dream 4… The Tunnel performed by: ORRRA (Arcata) “ORRRA is Hannah Rosencrans and Daniel Nickerson. ORRRA is cabin song, redwood drum and wood stove drone. ORRRA is a rock and roll band…” Dream 5… Crows performed by: Opossum Suntrail (Arcata) “Opossum Sun Trail is an American primitive country experimental band form Arcata featuring members of Moon Pine and Motherload…” Dream 6… Mount Fuji in Red performed by: Die Geister Beschwören (Arcata/Portland/Oakland) “Krautrock collective from Portland, Oregon. Multiple textures of music with widespread arrangements. A humble but perfect journey through 70‘s underground styles. Imagine all your favorite obscure German bands condensed into one…” Dream 7… The Weeping Demon performed by: Jonathan Kipp (Arcata) “Jonathan Kipp is a percussionist living in Arcata, California. He has a BA in music from Humboldt State University. He participates in a variety of projects and styles including classical, improvised, experimental and electronic…” Dream 8… Village of the Watermills performed by: Leone (Eureka)
