Break Bread and Burn Baskets
Join us for a closing community potluck at the Arcata Playhouse as we break bread and bask in the glow of a burning basket and the glorious women who have performed, produced, and partaken in this years Zero to Fierce Festival.
Installation artist Mavis Muller, Homer Alaska, will create a large sculpture of an intricately woven basket as part of
her traveling Weaving Watersheds series. This woven sculpture will be installed in the lobby of the Playhouse
during the festival and is available for public participation by way of inscribing pressed leaves with names of favorite waterways, flyways, and the creatures that inhabit them. This is in solidarity for the protection and restoration of the ways nature connects us as communities and as a small world. All are invited to write the names of departed loved ones on a folded paper crane and place on the basket. Interactive materials are provided.
After the potluck, the basket will be transported to the bottom of 9th St .in the creamery district at sundown, where it will be ignited and burned as a performance of fire-art.
All are welcome to attend. “Our collective positive intentions will be symbolically dispersed in the sparks and flames as an honoring what we love.”- Mavis Muller.
