Did you know about our local skipper surprise? Within Eureka city limits, there lies a secret population of sandhill skippers (Polites sabuleti). Normally found in high-quality habitats with abundant saltgrass (Distichlis spicata), the existence of this population is a testament to the abundant nature found in Humboldt County — even in town! Join us on our next field trip to say hello to our skipper neighbors and other denizens of the dunes.

We’ll meet at 11:00 am at the parking lot located at 40.75824, -124.19072. From there we’ll be hiking throughout the sand dunes to see acmon blues, field crescents, and (of course) sandhill skippers! This is a 3-mile out-and-back hike across mostly flat sandy ground. Participants can pace themselves and easily depart at any time to shorten their hike.

What to bring?

Comfortable sturdy shoes, water, extra water, food, extra food, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, binoculars, field guides, camera (optional), enthusiasm, and whatever other butterfly gear you may desire! Here’s a handy checklist to help you prepare.

When and where to meet?

We’ll be meeting at this parking area (40.75824, -124.19072) on Saturday, August 8 at 11:00 am. It is about a 25 minute drive from Arcata to the meeting spot.
