Cal Poly Humboldt Welcome Concert

Fulkerson Recital Hall

The Cal Poly Humboldt Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre Presents the “Cal Poly Humboldt Recital Series: Welcome Concert”. Join us Saturday September 12th at 7:30 pm at the Fulkerson Recital Hall for an evening of music performed by the faculty of the Cal Poly Humboldt Music Program and Friends. Tickets are $20 General, $5 for Children and Cal Poly Humboldt Students with ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at tickets.humboldt.edu/dance-music-and-theatre.
The program for the evening is as follows:

Blue Moon by Richard Rodgers and arranged by Dan Aldag will be performed by Chris Cox, trumpet, Jared Coyle, tenor saxophone, and Dan Aldag, trombone

Partita for Wind Quintet by Irving Fine will feature Gary Lewis, flute, Ginny Ryder, oboe, Ken Ayoob, clarinet, Michael Robertson, horn, and Danny Gaon, bassoon

Sonata for Violoncello and Piano by Edvard Grieg and Sonata for Violoncello and Piano by Sergei Rachmaninov pairs Garrick Woods, cello, and Daniela Mineva, piano. The sweeping passion of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor, Op. 19. is rich with soaring melodies, dramatic intensity, and lush Romantic harmonies This beloved masterpiece gives equal voice to both instruments. From moments of tender reflection to its exhilarating finale, the sonata showcases Rachmaninoff at his most expressive and unforgettable. The passion and Nordic spirit of Edvard Grieg’s Cello Sonata in A minor, Op. 36. Shine through with sweeping melodies, fiery rhythms, and moments of intimate lyricism that bring the cello and piano together in a thrilling musical dialogue. Deeply expressive and unmistakably Grieg, this Romantic masterpiece moves from stormy drama to a triumphant conclusion.

From Harawi—Chants d’Amour et de Mort by Olivier Messaien Annika Bäckström, soprano, and Daniela Mineva, piano perform La Ville Qui Dormait, Toi! and Bonjour Toi, Colombe Verte. Enter the vivid, dreamlike world of Olivier Messiaen’s Harawi, an extraordinary song cycle for soprano and piano. Inspired by Andean imagery and the Tristan legend, this rarely performed masterpiece explores love, longing, sacrifice, and death through ecstatic rhythms, brilliant color, and haunting lyricism. Experience one of Messiaen’s most imaginative and emotionally powerful works in an intimate live performance.
