Cal Poly Humboldt Recital Series: Woods Trio

Fulkerson Recital Hall

The Cal Poly Humboldt Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre Presents the “The Woods Trio”. Local cellist and Cal Poly Humboldt professor, Garrick Woods, is joined by his father Rex (piano), and brother Alex (violin) on September 25 at 7:30PM in Fulkerson Recital Hall to present Haydn’s Hungarian-folk inspired Trio no. 29 in G Major and Johannes Brahms’ dramatic Piano Trio no. 2 in C Major, Op. 87. Tickets are $20 General, $5 for Children and Cal Poly Humboldt Students with ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at tickets.humboldt.edu/section/dance-music-theatre-kldu.

From family chamber music fun and performance to intensive arts exposure through private study and summers at Interlochen Arts Camp, the Woods family have wowed and moved audiences for three decades. The years have scattered family members across the country, yet they still come together to effortlessly communicate musically and perform.

The Woods family has included other talented family members mother Mary (singer), brother Charles (percussion/voice), and in-laws Aubrey (violin) and Chris Smith (bassoon) under the guise of “Woodsmusick Ensemble.” At the height of their activity, they incorporated members of their expanding family and professionally recorded Chamber works by composer Richard Faith in 2016. The sentimental album, Richard Faith: Neo-Romantic Works for Mixed Chamber ensemble, is available from Tantara records and is well worth several good listens.

This particular Haydn trio joins some of the other great and unexpected favorites such as the “Surprise” symphony and “Joke” trio that demonstrate he appealed both to the “upstairs” and “downstairs” audience of the Esterházy estate. It is, simply put, very fun music and certainly doesn’t go by the book!

Brahms’ C Major piano trio is a somewhat more mature work in his output and strikes a good balance in nearly everything it does. While the main C major themes come across as heroic and optimistic, Brahms’ progressive thematic development ensures that nearly every emotion is visited with a good balance of major and minor keys, while his familiar rhythmic displacement and fondness for the 3:2 polyrhythm shine through. Brahms’ chamber music was clearly a training and proving ground for his Symphonic works and the richness of his orchestration shines through in the varied roles of each of the three instruments.

Garrick Woods remains active in Humboldt as a cellist, conductor, and musical jack-of-all-trades, Alexander Woods is a professor of violin at Brigham Young University and regularly performs with the Utah Symphony, Rex Woods is an emeritus professor of piano at the University of Arizona and continues, in retirement, to enjoy teaching piano and accompanying at Utah schools.
