The evenings program begins with a performance of Fantomen by Eric Öst featuring Cindy Moyer, violin, and Karen Davy, violin.

Next, MJ Fabian, solo steel pan, will perform Love by Liam Teague. Teague speaks of the piece, “[It’s] “Dedicated to my fiancée, Lorena Nunez. A very short but beautiful piece that highlights the steelpan’s lyricism.”

Gary Lewis, flute, Virginia Ryder, alto saxophone and John Chernoff, piano, follow with
Trio for Flute, Alto Saxophone and Piano by Russell Peterson.

Cindy Moyer, violin, and MJ Fabian, marimba, will then join for the next piece entitled, A Little prayer. “I discovered Evelyn Glennie’s A Little Prayer as I was doing an internet search for music for violin and marimba,” Says Moyer. “It’s one of the most beautiful, simple, little pieces ever written. In its original version, it was composed for solo marimba, but it’s been arranged for all sorts of ensembles including junior high school band. MJ Fabian created the arrangement for the concert.” Moyer and Fabian have performed the piece in concert together in the past but are joined this time by Kyleigh Brine who will dance as part of the performance.

The program continues with Travelogue for Piano, Violin and Alto Saxophone by Belo Horizonte performed by Cindy Moyer, violin, Virginia Ryder, alto saxophone, and John Chernoff, piano.

Next on the program, Humboldt alum and current faculty MJ Fabian, solo vibraphone, performs his original composition Serenade. MJ performs locally as the principal percussionist of the Eureka Symphony, as well as with the Calypso Band, Percussion Ensemble, and University Singers of Cal Poly Humboldt.

Cindy Moyer, violin, and John Chernoff, piano conclude the evening with a performance of Danzas Latinoamericanas composed by José L. Elizondo “Danzas Latinoamericanas (Latin American Dances) is a 10-minute suite in three movements. It was originally commissioned by Mexican cellist Carlos Prieto. It is based on some of the national dances of Argentina, Brazil and Mexico respectively. The first movement, Otoño en Buenos Aires (Autumn in Buenos Aires), is indebted to the concert-style tango of Astor Piazzolla, as well as the extraordinary songs of Carlos Gardel. Pan de Azúcar (Sugar Loaf) is named after the famous mountain in Rio de Janeiro. It echoes the sensuous music of Antonio Carlos Jobim and the exuberant vitality of the works of Heitor Villa-Lobos. His synthesis of the Brazilian folk tradition and of late Romantic string writing provided a major inspiration for this movement. Elizondo’s creative use of pizzicato produces textures that are playful, delicate and dance-like, supporting the lyrical melodies. Atardecer Tapatío (Sunset in Guadalajara) is inspired by Mexican folk dance music and the sound of “mariachi” bands. Elizondo doesn’t shy away from using simple, standard forms as a canvas for his joyful melodies. This music is a tribute to the composer’s homeland.”—cellobello.org
