Cal Poly Recital Series—Jennifer Trowbridge and David Powell
The Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre at Cal Poly Humboldt presents The Cal Poly Humboldt Recital Series: Jennifer Trowbridge and David Powell. The evening’s program, entitled “Flow My Tears,” includes music that reflects on love and loss, and expresses the beauty in both. The performance is Saturday, September 24th at 8:00 p.m. at the Fulkerson Recital Hall. Concert tickets are $15 General, $5 Children, and FREE for Cal Poly Humboldt students with ID. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at centerarts.humboldt.edu—including tickets to our paid livestream.
From the “All Events” drop down menu select “School of Dance, Music, and Theatre” and select your event. Proof of COVID vaccination and booster is still required for all guests on campus. At press time, the wearing of facemasks is not mandatory, but it is strongly encouraged.
Guitarist Jennifer Trowbridge will begin the program with compositions by Bach, Couperin, Scarlatti, Weiss, and Sagreras. “It’s a celebration of the versatility of the guitar—how the guitar can reach into so many different historical periods and cultures, while always offering music that reaches toward today’s audiences and feels relatable for everyone with its grooving rhythms and songlike melodies,” says Jennifer Trowbridge. “Another part of the guitar’s versatility is its ability to render music written for other instruments such as the lute and harpsichord.”
Tenor David Powell joins Jennifer for the second half of the program to perform songs that range from English Renaissance lute-songs by John Dowland to traditional Scottish and Irish ballads. A highlight will be the 20th-century Brazilian aria by Heitor Villa-Lobos from his collection of pieces inspired by Bach called Bachianas Brasileiras. “What’s interesting about this piece is that it was originally written for soprano voice and six cellos, but we are doing it with tenor voice and guitar. Our version changes the colors of the piece and makes it extremely intimate, and perhaps even more Brazilian.”
Jennifer Trowbridge leads the guitar program and directs Mariachi de Humboldt at Cal Poly Humboldt. She received her master’s and doctoral degrees in guitar performance at Northwestern University. David Powell is a classically trained tenor who received his B.A. in music performance from Cal Poly Humboldt, his M.F.A. in theatre from Dell’Arte International, and completed his post-graduate studies in New York.
On why Jennifer hopes you attend: “I think it so important to hear live music— together—because it is a time for us to open up our hearts and feel connection. When we listen music in the recital hall, it’s a shared experience. The shared experience changes how we hear the music. Often, we experience music more deeply when we are sharing it with others.”
