California Poets in the Schools

Northtown Books

Northtown Books hosts a reading honoring California Poets in the Schools for National Poetry Month on Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m.

Humboldt poets Jerry Martien, Celia Homesley, Daryl Chinn, Dan Brewer, Julie Hochfeld and Dan Zev Levinson will read their work, and donations will be accepted to support the work of Poets in the Schools.

For the last six years, Daryl Chinn, Dan Levinson and Julie Hochfeld applied for and received Artists in the Schools Grants (matching grants) from the California Arts Council to help bring CPITS to Humboldt County. They are in the process of reapplying now for the upcoming school year.

CPITS was founded in 1964 and is “one of the largest literary artists-in-residence programs in the nation” (CPITS website)  serving Humboldt for around 30 years. Currently, CPITS reachs about 1,000 students per year locally with its poetry residencies in classrooms. Poetry students range from young elementary kids to teens in Juvenile Hall and the Court and Community School. Students, parents, and teachers it - it empowers students by helping them find and express their voices, and in the process, helps build self esteem. Plus, the poems the kids write are truly remarkable.

Northtown Books is at 957 H St. Arcata, CA ~ 707-822 2834
