Casey Neill and the Norway Rats
Join us at the beautiful Historic Eagle House for one of Humboldt’s favorites! The music of Casey Neill & The Norway Rats combines high energy indie rock rave-ups and haunting lush acoustic reveries built around melodic narrative songwriting. The Norway Rats feature Chet Lyster (Eels) on guitars, Jesse Emerson on bass, John Askew on keys and guitars, and Stuart Murray on drums. Neill has been touring extensively through the USA, Japan, and Europe for more than a decade, performing his songs at venues such as Town Hall in New York, San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall, and the Newport Folk Festival. He is often a member of the Northwest power pop collective The Minus 5 (with members of R.E.M.) as well as Japanese/American cross cultural band Big Bridges. A new CD/LP Subterrene is out in March of 2018 with songs co-written and produced by Lyster. Described by Neill as a work of dystopian romance, the band is tapping into new creative wells, where electronic elements weave in and out underneath razor sharp guitars. While not a traditional concept album, Subterrene follows a distinct story arc, and the ominous-yet-defiantly-optimistic portraits it paints were inspired in equal parts by vintage sci-fi novels, our current political climate, and the globetrotting manner in which Neills lived for the past few years. Their previous CD/LP “All You Pretty Vandals” was produced by Chris Funk of the Decemberists and garnered rave reviews from national press, online blogs, and widespread radio play. Since its release they have performed on NPRs Mountain Stage, a Daytrotter session, and clocked countless road miles. teeming with rich lyrics that paint the glory and gutter of a wanderers struggle. Neills bellows pack the punch of white-capped seas, soaking the bands big sky, prairie wind sound with a haunting graveness. It just may be Portlands strongest brand of unfettered, contemporary roots rock.” - Mark Stock, WILLAMETTE WEEK “These are songs with stories well told.
