Since 1991, Clan Dyken and supporters have journeyed to Big Mountain, Arizona to deliver food, supplies, firewood, and labor to elders and families resisting forced relocation due to opposition to the world’s largest coal strip mine. These efforts are part of a larger mission to raise awareness and stand in solidarity with indigenous communities defending their land.
Clan Dyken’s music and activism are deeply intertwined, blending calls for environmental justice, human rights, and the celebration of sacred traditions. Drummer Mark Dyken says, “The spectacle of an American presidential election often takes focus away from many important issues. While so much is at stake, it’s vital that we stay connected to the things that make our world beautiful. This tour unites us with a larger community that believes in the power of the natural world. We are grateful to support our Dine’ relatives and look forward to seeing you in 2024.”
Attendees can consider donating tools and supplies for the Dyken’s to bring with them ~ and can bring them to the concert. The band has the capacity to take tools, blankets, and coats if they are in excellent condition. Hand tools that are most helpful - axes, mauls, wedges, saws, flashlights (w/batteries), and gloves, as well as chainsaws.
Based in California’s Calaveras County, Clan Dyken, formed by brothers Mark and Bear Dyken, has harmonized, toured, activated, and entertained for more than 35 years. Kris Osward, a long-time collaborator, will fill in on bass. Clan Dyken has been involved in solar and bicycle-powered music, and touring since the late 80’s ~ using clean power as part of the art form. This is music from the vernacular of community, rallies, and demonstrations. They’ve always been willing to lend a hand, tunes, and sound equipment to a worthy campaign. Clan Dyken continues to refine the tribal-funk-eco-folk-rock-hippy-soul music they’ve been making for more than 30 years while taking us on an incredible journey into the heart of how we can all contribute to society’s positive evolution through collective and personal action.
