Climate Activism: The Reluctant Radical

The Sanctuary

The award-winning documentary The Reluctant Radical will be shown on Sunday, February 3, at 7 PM at The Sanctuary, 13th and J Streets in Arcata. The film profiles Ken Ward, a 60 year old Oregon man who joined a small group of activists to shut down five tar sands oil pipelines in 2016. He was arrested for his action, but charges were later dropped after a jury was unable to reach a verdict. The film explores Ward’s decision to engage in an action that he knew could land him in prison. Ward says, “We need sides to be drawn. Either you’re for burning fossil fuels and ending the world, or you’re against it. Which is it?” Presentation of The Reluctant Radical is a joint endeavor by the Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship’s Climate Action Campaign and the local activist group 350/Humboldt. A Q and A by videochat with Ken Ward will take place after the film.
