Fulkerson Recital Hall

The Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre at Cal Poly Humboldt presents “Contemporary Music for Percussion performed by the Cal Poly Humboldt Percussion Ensemble and the Exciting Rhythms of the Brasilian tradition performed by the World Percussion Group.” The concert is Sunday, April 16th at 8pm at the Fulkerson Recital Hall, Cal Poly Humboldt. Directed by Eugene Novotney & Howard Kaufman, tickets are $10 General, $5 Child/Senior, and FREE for Cal Poly Humboldt students with ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at centerarts.humboldt.edu

The Cal Poly Humboldt Percussion Ensemble will be featuring four premieres of exciting new works never before heard on the North Coast. The first premiere is a groove piece composed by Dustin Schulze entitled, Lucid Mantra. This work features a large percussion orchestra consisting of eleven performers playing four marimbas, three vibraphones, glockenspeil, electric bass, drumset, and grand piano. The piece has a strong rhythmic drive throughout, and at the center of the piece is a strong rhythmic unison section that links the opening and closing textures of the work in a cohesive and dramatic fashion.

The second premier on the program is an outstanding work by composer Mark Mellits entitled, Gravity. Marc Mellits is one of the leading American composers of his generation. From Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center to prestigious music festivals in Europe and the US, Mellits’ music is a constant mainstay on programs throughout the world. His unique musical style is an eclectic combination of driving rhythms, soaring lyricism, and colorful orchestrations that all combine to communicate directly with the listener

The second half of the show will feature a suite of traditional Brasilian music performed by the Cal Poly Humboldt World Percussion Group. This semester’s performance will feature a transcription by their director, Howard Kaufman, of the rhythms of the famous Brasilian group, Monobloco. Monobloco is a Bloco, or street band, that parades during carnival in Rio de Janeiro and is also a professional touring band. Unlike most of Rio’s Blocos, which tend play one type of music, Monobloco has become extremely popular among younger people because of its fresh sound, consisting of a mix of various rhythms such as Coco, Ciranda, Marchinha, Xote, and particularly, Samba-Funk. Monobloco continues to grow in popularity each year and can be seen as a symbol of the resurging popularity in Carnaval Blocos in Rio de Janeiro. The World Percussion Group has been working extremely hard on their authentic presentation of these Monobloco rhythms and will be sure to groove and entertain.
