The Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre at Cal Poly Humboldt presents “Dance Visions 2023”, an annual spring dance concert, featuring 44 dancers and ten dances in the diverse styles of ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, tap, and Middle Eastern. The concert runs April 12–15 at 7:30pm and Sunday April 16th at 2pm in the John Van Duzer Theatre on campus.

Faculty members Linda Maxwell, Shoshanna, and Carrie Walpole have choreographed dances, along with Cal Poly Humboldt dance alum Jonny Wisan. Student choreographers include Breanna Donlon, Angel Harvey, Helinna Leone, Thi Samelson, Calvin Tjosaas. The concert is under the direction of faculty members Linda Maxwell and Carrie Walpole.

Alum Jonny Wisan has created Contrafact, a jazz style dance set to the song Higher by Michael Bublè, Ryan Tedder, Greg Wells. This dance is “both a tribute to, and a conglomeration of, the many styles of Jazz Dance of the 20th century.”

Restless Yearning, choreographed by faculty member Shoshanna, is a fusion of Middle Eastern forms of dance, from traditional to experimental: Egyptic, Khaliji, and Bigharar.

Both concert directors also contributed to Dance Visions”, with Walpole’s hip hop/funk dance, Sound the Alarm , and Maxwell’s dance, Dis//Re-Connect, a contemporary ballet about the look at feelings of isolation and mistrust into the hope of our emergence into a sense of camaraderie and connection in our present times.

Student dances rounding out the concert include Dew Point, by Breanna Donlon, and Windswept, by Thi Samelson, both contemporary style dances. Moments in Time, about a couple dealing with the ups and downs of their relationship is a duet choreographed by Zephie Harvey. The style of tap dance is featured in Cooler Than Me, by choreographers and dancers Thi Samelson & Gabby Jones. Senior dance major Helinna Leonne has created Dans Une Bouteille, a contemporary/jazz number with 5 dancers.
Deus ex machina , featuring 13 dancers, choreographed by Calvin Tjosaas & cast, is the story of a “community upended after witnessing a strange event.” The number features 9 musical pieces, with a range of composers from Léo Delibes, Vangelis, and Mussorgsky, to the song Boogie Wonderland.
