Distinguished Speaker Series
Humboldt State University Native American Forum
Dr. Ignacio Chapela is coming to Humboldt to speak on GMOs. Join us at 7:00pm for the talk. This is a free event.
Measure P is a carefully targeted ordinance which pertains only to the growing or raising of GMOs and will not affect the sale or consumption of food with GMO ingredients. However, news of the measure has made lots of local residents curious about the broader issues surrounding GMOs. Therefore, in the interest of public education, the Yes on Measure P campaign is helping to bring several distinguished speakers to Humboldt County to talk about various aspects of the broader GMO debate.
The third speaker in the series is Dr. Ignacio Chapela. Dr. Chapela is an Associate Professor of Microbial Ecology at the University of California, Berkeley. He has held various research posts in the UK, Switzerland, Norway, and on both coasts of the United States. Before joining the faculty at UC Berkeley, Dr. Chapela, a native of Mexico, worked in the agro- and pharma industry, academia and policy-making institutions. In addition to his work on microbial ecology he has also engaged in research on the access, ownership and stewardship of genetic resources. Dr. Chapela also served on the US National Academy of Sciences’ Special Committee on the Environmental Impacts of Transgenic Crops. Dr. Chapela will speak on “GMOs: Who Wins, Who Loses?” at the following times:
Friday, September 12th, 7:00 pm at Humboldt State University’s Native American Forum in Arcata
Saturday, September 13th, 6:00pm at the Humboldt Hill Grange in Eureka
