Dumb Movies With Smart People: Outbreak

Have you ever been watching a disaster movie and thought, ‘Wait, could that REALLY happen?’ Have you ever watched an actor playing a scientist and wondered, ‘Is everything they are saying completely made up, or is that really a thing?’ If so, this is the film series for you! This month, we are showing “Outbreak” In a nightmarish (but cheesy) extrapolation from real events in the nonfiction book The Hot Zone, by Richard Preston, this thriller-disaster film imagines a deadly contagious disease that breaks out first in Africa, and then in a California town, threatening the entire world.Will the world fall to this deadly disease? And more importantly: is anything in this movie even remotely accurate? After the movie, we have local epidemiologist Ron Largusa available to answer any questions, and let us know what the movie got right, and what it got so, so wrong.
