A Harvest of Stones is the poetic story of a farmer who struggles to hold onto his land in the face of drought, debt, and ecological disaster. Against the tide of his neighbors, who sell off their land and give in to despair, he resolves to bring in a crop, no matter what the cost. This full-length devised work marks the culmination of the second-year M.F.A. ensemble’s eight-week investigation into the realm of Tragedy, a confrontation with the experience of suffering, and with the reality of death. A Harvest of Stones creates a sweeping, poetic, non-linear world which is rooted in gesture and image. Animals and elements of the natural world bear witness to the demise of the farmer and his wife, provoked by a mysterious drifter. Through an evocative interplay of movement in groups and duets, the tragic story unfolds, and hurtles to its devastating conclusion. Tragedy is a form which, at its root, pits the rational and ordered world against the cosmic forces of destruction and chaos. Through the hero’s journey and fall, we glimpse the most shocking aspect of the human condition: our powerlessness. Among dramatic forms, tragedy is unique in its capacity to awaken feelings of awe in an audience, an awe which is, finally, life-affirming. As Rilke put it, “He who does not at some time consent to the terrible in life, or even exult in it, never takes possession of the inexpressible fullness of the power of our existence…” On Friday, April 19th, The Logger Bar will host a fundraiser and after-party, “Disco for Dell’Arte,” as part of Humboldt Green Week 2013. Disco Music! Costumes Encouraged! One dollar from each drink will be donated to Dell’Arte! To make reservations for A Harvest of Stones, call the Dell’Arte Box Office at (707) 668-5663, ext. 20. |
